RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt and maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Pet Memorial for Ramsey
FOR RAMSEY
Ramsey was a beautiful blue-eyed bundle of love. His mother is a stray neighborhood feral calico cat and his father, we believe, was once someone's pet that either got lost or was deliberately left behind. We used to call him Tinkerbelle because he had a bell on his collar and we always knew when he was coming. Ramsey's resemblance to his father was unmistakable. He appeared to have some Siamese in him in that he has the blue eyes, dark tips on his ears and a dark tail. Otherwise the rest of his body was white with just a touch of beige. He also inherited, like his father, an extra toe on each of his front paws.

He was born about a year ago in early June and may have even died on or near his first birthday from something else that was inherited from his parents. Out of five kittens he and three others tested positive for FIV, an immune system disease in cats that is similar to AIDs in humans. We didn't even know such a disease existed. There is no real cure for it and a vaccine is being worked on but if it is given the cat will always test positive for FIV. FIV positive cats can live normal lives if the FIV virus can be kept in check. FIV cannot be passed on to dogs or other animals or humans and FIV is normally contracted from a cat bite. One of the other kittens was sick very early on with it and almost died but has made a remarkable recovery and appears to be a happy healthy cat. We give him lysine on a daily basis to keep his immune system healthy.

Ramsey was not as lucky however. He was relatively healthy until late April of this year when he started losing weight and seemed lethargic. We took him to our vet who ran every test there is on him and they never indicated anything was wrong. He kept on losing weight though and went from twelve pounds down to six by the end of May despite our best efforts to get him to eat. We thought Ramsey was on the road to recovery because he got his appetite back and was gaining a little bit of weight and was acting more like himself. Our vet believed that he had some kind of neurological problem though and he quickly took a drastic turn for the worse. The only merciful thing left to do was to put him to sleep on June 9th and that's what we tearfully did.

Ramsey's short life was a real blessing to us though. He was a very gentle, loving kitten except when he was chewing on our shoelaces which he did whenever he got the chance. We jokingly said that his name should have been shadow because he was always following us around and right at our heels, wanting to be picked up and held. He also seemed to be the big brother of the other kittens, not just in size, but always looking out for them. When the last kitten in the litter hadn't opened its eyes yet Ramsey very gently licked his eyes and seemed to be looking out for him. We will never forget Ramsey and will do our best to keep his sisters and brothers healthy. In Ramsey's memory I hope you will keep your cats indoors so they won't be exposed to the FIV virus, and I pray that a cure or a good vaccine will be available soon to prevent the heartache and suffering that we and Ramsey, and all the other FIV positive cats and owners have gone through.
